LINES OF RESEARCH
- SEARCH FOR INHIBITORS OF ABC TRANSPORTER PROTEINS IN NATURAL PRODUCTS: POTENTIAL USE AS RESENSITIZING AGENTS IN CHEMOTHERAPY
This research focuses on finding new, potent, selective, and safe inhibitors of ABC transporters that affect drug bioavailability and are linked to drug resistance in cancer and other diseases. We have observed that consuming arugula leaves (Eruca vesicaria and Diplotaxis tenuifolia varieties) and extracts of Cannabis sativa have anti-proliferative effects and can inhibit the activity of ABC transporters involved in drug resistance. Our goal is to further study the interaction of these natural compounds with ABC transporters at the molecular level using in vitro methods and human tumor cells from liver carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, and breast cancer. The aim is to validate a biomethod for screening the activity of compounds isolated from plant material to develop new, more effective therapeutic targets for cancer treatment.
- PARTICIPATION OF OATP4C1 AND MRP4 TRANSPORTERS IN THE PROGRESSION OF AUTOSOMAL DOMINANT POLYCYSTOX KIDNEY DISEASE (ADPKD) AND ITS CORRELATION WITH URINARY cAMP LEVELS: SEARCH FOR EARLY BIOMARKERS OF PROGRESSION
This research involves a clinical study to determine if monitoring free urinary cAMP or in extracellular vesicles (EVs), as well as the renal transporters MRP4 and OATP4C1, in urinary sediment or EVs, allows for early prediction of chronic kidney failure in ADPKD patients. The functionality of renal MRP4 and OATP4C1 at the in vitro level in cell cultures will also be evaluated to ascertain whether they could be potential therapeutic targets.
- DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF A COST-EFFECTIVE MAGNETIC METHOD FOR ISOLATING EXTRACELLULAR VESICLES FOR APPLICATIONS IN PROLIFERATIVE NEPHROPATHOLOGIES AT THE CLINICAL LEVEL
This research aims to develop a cost-effective method for isolating extracellular vesicles called exosomes, which are important in cell communication and as biomarkers for diseases. Standard methods for isolating exosomes involve ultracentrifugation, which may not be feasible in clinical laboratories. This study aims to address these challenges and provide a more practical method for isolating exosomes.
